New Knight of the Order of the Thistle

Queen Appoints New Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland

Her Majesty the Queen has appointed His Grace The Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry KBE DL FSA FRSE to the position of Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for 2018.

His Grace The Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry will be the Queen’s personal representative within the Church of Scotland. As the Lord High Commissioner, The Duke will carry out the opening and closing addresses at the General Assembly.

KCVO for Surveyor of The Queen’s Works of Art

Mr Jonathan Mark Marsden CVO has been appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) for his service as Director of the Royal Collection and Surveyor of The Queen’s Works of Art.

New Captain General of the Royal Marines

His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales KCVO has been appointed by Her Majesty The Queen to succeed His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT OM GCVO GBE as Captain General of the Royal Marines - a post which HRH the Duke of Edinburgh had held since 1953. Prince Harry’s appointment comes following the Duke of Edinburgh’s retirement from public life in the autumn of this year.

New Lord Lieutenant for Nairnshire

Mr George Russell Asher DL has been appointed by Her Majesty the Queen to become Lord Lieutenant for Nairnshire succeeding Mr Ewen Brodie CVO who retired on the 16th December 2017.

New Colonel of the Grenadier Guards

His Royal Highness The Duke of York KG GCVO ADC has been appointed by Her Majesty The Queen to succeed His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT OM GCVO GBE as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards - a post which HRH the Duke of Edinburgh had held since 1975. Her Majesty The Queen has decreed that the following persons shall have their Honour cancelled, annulled and their name shall be erased from the Register of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Her Majesty the Queen Revokes Top Policeman’s Honour

Her Majesty the Queen has decreed that the award of the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM) to Mr Nicholas James Gargan on the 30th December 2011 shall be cancelled and annulled. Mr Gargan, former Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset police constabulary was stripped of his honour after being found guilty of multiple counts of misconduct.

Life Peerage for the Former Chief of the Defence Staff

Her Majesty The Queen has granted General Sir John Nicholas Reynolds Houghton GCB CBE the title of Baron Houghton of Richmond, of Richmond in the County of North Yorkshire for the duration of his life under the Life Peerage Act of 1958.

He was nominated for a Life Peerage following his service as Chief of the Defence Staff. Lord Houghton of Richmond will sit in the House of Lords as a Crossbencher.
