On the 10th of March 2024, His Majesty the King appointed His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KG, GCVO to be an Extra Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle.

On the 10th of March 2024, His Majesty the King appointed His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry KT KBE CVO to the Office of Chancellor of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle after the passing of The Rt Hon the Earl of Airlie KT GCVO.

The Very Reverend Professor Iain Richard Torrance TD was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) for his service as Dean of the Chapels Royal in Scotland and Dean of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle.

Her Majesty the Queen has appointed The Very Reverend Professor David Fergusson, Dean of the Chapel Royal in Scotland and Dean of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle succeeding The Very Reverend Professor Iain Torrance who has retired.

As part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2018, Her Majesty the Queen has appointed Sir Ian Wood GBE a Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle (KT).

The Order of the Thistle is the highest honour in Scotland and was founded in 1687.

KCVO for Dean of the Order of the Thistle

The Very Reverend Gilleasbuig Macmillan CVO FRSE has been appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) for his service as Dean of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle.

New Secretary to the Order of the Thistle

Her Majesty the Queen has appointed Mrs Elizabeth Ann Roads LVO OStJ FSA to the position of Secretary of The Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle following the retirement of Mr William David Hamilton Sellar MVO FRhistS.

Mrs Roads is the current Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records and is also the Snawdoun Herald of Arms in Ordinary.

Two new members of the The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle (KT) have been announced in the New Year’s Honours they are as follows:

Sir William Garth Morrison KT CBE (1943-2013)

It is with great regret I announce the death of Sir William Garth Morrison KT CBE. Born on the 8th April 1943 and studied at Pangbourne College, Cambridge then went to Britannia Royal Naval College. He served in the Royal Navy from 1961 to 1973. He was Chief Scout of the UK from 1988-1996.

In 1994 he was awarded the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE). In 2001 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian and held the office till his death. In 2007 he was made Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle (KT). On the 24th May 2013 he passed away after a brief illness. He was survived by his wife Lady Gill Morrison ad his three children.

On the 25th of May 2012, Her Majesty the Queen appointed Prince William, Duke of Cambridge KG Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle (KT). The Order of the Thistle is the highest honour in Scotland and was founded in 1687.
