New King of Spain

Prince Felipe has now become King Felipe VI of Spain following the abdication of his father King Juan Carlos I on the 18th June 2014. King Juan Carlos signed the Abdication act at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

Prince Felipe was officially sworn in as the new king of Spain today at the Spanish Parliament. The former King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia will retain the style of king and queen for life.

The heir to the Spanish throne is King Felipe’s 8 year old daughter Leonor, as she is heir to the throne she has assumed the title Princess of Asturias.

King Juan Carlos I of Spain to Abdicate

In a letter to the Spanish Prime Minister King Juan Carlos has announced he is abdicating the Spanish Throne in favour of his son Prince Felipe, Prince of Asturias.

The Act of Abdication has not been signed yet a constitutional amendment is needed to allow the abdication to take place.

King Albert II of Belgium to Abdicate

In an address to the nation King Albert announced he is abdicating the Belgian Throne in favour of his son Prince Philippe, Duke of Brabant.

The Act of Abdication will be signed on the 21st of July 2013 Belgium’s National Day.

The Emir of Qatar will Abdicate Tomorrow

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani Emir of Qatar has confirmed he is abdicating the Qatari Throne in favour of his son Crown Prince Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. Sheikh Hamad will address the nation of Qatar at 08.00 local time (05.00 GMT) tomorrow morning. Tomorrow the 25th June 2013 will also be a national holiday in Qatar to mark the abdication.

The Dutch Abdication and Investiture

Today marks the abdication of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and the Investiture of her son King Willem-Alexander below is the outline of today’s events.

10:00 local time (08:00 GMT) - Queen Beatrix to sign the act of abdication at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam

10:30 - (08:30 GMT) the former queen, now Princess Beatrix, and the new King Willem-Alexander will appear on the palace balcony, with new Queen Maxima

14:00 - (12:00 GMT) King Willem-Alexander to be sworn in at the Nieuwe Kerk

19:30 - (17:30 GMT) performance of The Song for the King followed by a water pageant
